Disney+ Pits Real Judges Against Prosecutors in New Korean Legal Debate Show

Disney+ has announced that Ipansapan: Spear and Shield, a new Korean legal variety show, will premiere on August 19, with episodes dropping every Wednesday across a ten-episode run.

The format is straightforward but genuinely unusual: actual judges and prosecutors are placed on opposing sides of real verdicts that stirred public controversy, arguing each case from scratch with competing logic. The title is a Korean wordplay on the proverb 'ipan sapan' (meaning 'either way, you lose'), while 'spear and shield' names the adversarial structure directly.

Beyond relitigating headline-making rulings, the show also addresses everyday legal questions that tend to confuse ordinary people, translating dense statutory language into plain explanations. It is the kind of public-service framing that Korean variety television does well when it commits to it.

Comedian and host Jang Do-yeon takes the MC role, asking questions from a viewer's perspective and keeping the debate accessible rather than purely technical. Her casting is a sensible choice: she has a reputation for quick thinking and a plainspoken style that should prevent the legal arguments from collapsing into jargon.
