The Back Muscle Definition Go Youn-jung Showed at the Blue Dragon Series Awards
Actress Go Youn-jung turned heads at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards in a black off-shoulder dress that put her back definition on full display. The look prompted interest in how that kind of muscle tone is actually built, and one exercise keeps coming up.

Actress Go Youn-jung posted a set of photos from the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards on her Instagram on the 2nd, and the one that stopped people was a backless shot. She wore a black off-shoulder dress, and the definition across her upper back and shoulder line was clear enough that it became the detail everyone talked about.
In her caption, she wrote that she had received a meaningful gift at the ceremony and expressed sincere gratitude for the ongoing support and love from fans.
The dress did its job well. An off-shoulder, open-back silhouette is unforgiving in the best possible way: there is nowhere for the styling to hide, so what you see is what the body actually looks like. The structure across Go Youn-jung's trapezius and rear deltoid area read as built rather than incidental, which is a different quality than simply being slim.
Building that kind of back definition comes down to developing the latissimus dorsi and the surrounding upper back musculature in proportion. The Mayo Clinic cites the lat pulldown as one of the most effective exercises for this, and the reasoning is straightforward: it targets the lats directly while recruiting the rear deltoids and rhomboids, which together create the three-dimensional quality that makes a back look sculpted rather than flat.
The form matters more than the weight. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width, keep the chest lifted, and pull the bar down toward the chest slowly. The cue that most people miss: drive the elbows back and down rather than simply pulling with the arms, and think about squeezing the shoulder blades together at the bottom of the movement. That scapular retraction is where the real muscle engagement happens.
One position the Mayo Clinic specifically advises against is pulling the bar behind the neck. It places excessive strain on the cervical spine and shoulder joints and raises the injury risk without adding meaningful benefit over the standard front-of-chest pull.
Control throughout the full range of motion is the other consistent point. Using momentum to swing the weight through the movement reduces the load on the target muscles and shifts stress onto joints instead. For most people, 12 to 15 controlled repetitions per set is enough stimulus to develop the lat and upper back strength that, over time, improves both the visible muscle line and postural alignment.
