Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung Launch Subunit HyoRiSoo With Debut Single Skibidi

Girls' Generation members Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung have officially launched their subunit HyoRiSoo with the debut digital single Skibidi, released on August 31. The project grew out of a fan-favorite segment on Hyoyeon's personal YouTube channel, where the three members staged a mock competition for the main vocal and center positions, and the chemistry was too good to leave online.

Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung released their debut single as the subunit HyoRiSoo on August 31 at 6 p.m. KST, with SM Entertainment confirming the news through official channels. The single, titled Skibidi, came packaged with a performance video premiered simultaneously on the SM Town YouTube channel.

For anyone who caught the YouTube content that sparked the whole thing, the release feels almost inevitable. HyoRiSoo grew out of a series on Hyoyeon's personal channel where the three members competed, with deliberate absurdist flair, for the title of main vocal and center. The mock rivalry became a genuine talking point, drawing in a string of celebrity guests including TVXQ's U-Know Yunho, DinDin, and John Park, all appearing to "help" the three debut. The fan response was loud enough that SM turned the bit into an actual release.

What's on the single

Skibidi opens in house music territory before shifting into a hip-hop framework, with Arabian string samples threaded throughout to add an unexpected exotic texture. The genre pivot mid-track is the sonic version of HyoRiSoo's whole personality: something familiar, taken somewhere slightly sideways. Thematically, the song carries a message about carving out a new path on your own terms.

The B-side, Lowkey In Love, goes in a different direction entirely. It's a retro-leaning dance pop track built on bright brass hits and a rhythmically confident groove, with a melody that's designed to stick immediately. Where Skibidi leans into its own structural restlessness, Lowkey In Love keeps things warm and direct, which suits the trio well.

From a festival preview to the official drop

HyoRiSoo had already given live audiences a first look at the new material on the 22nd, performing the songs at the 2026 KASSCOOL Festival held at Seoul Land in Gwacheon. That preview let the members calibrate their stage presence as a unit before the wider release, and by the time the single dropped officially, the performance chemistry was clearly already there.

With Girls' Generation approaching their 20th debut anniversary next year, HyoRiSoo lands as something genuinely spirited rather than ceremonial. Three veterans who know exactly who they are, doing something a little weird with that knowledge, and making it work.
