BTS Ticket at 27x Face Value: How One Man Built a $1.74M Scalping Empire

A man in his 30s has been indicted in South Korea after allegedly running a ticket scalping operation that netted roughly 2.4 billion won ($1.74 million) over more than seven years. He bought 8,967 tickets to K-pop concerts, sports matches and other high-demand events using automated macro programs and accounts belonging to family members, then resold them at steep markups. Police announced the arrest Thursday.

The Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency referred the suspect to prosecutors on charges including obstruction of business and violations of the Public Performance Act. Prosecutors have since indicted him.

The markups were not subtle

The numbers in the indictment are staggering. The suspect allegedly bought a ticket to BTS's 2019 concert at Jamsil Sports Complex for 110,000 won, then resold it for 3 million won, more than 27 times face value. A Stray Kids concert ticket purchased for 165,000 won in 2025 was flipped for 2 million won. A SEVENTEEN fan meeting ticket bought for 110,000 won went for 1.8 million.

It wasn't limited to K-pop. A 2024 soccer match between Team K League and Tottenham Hotspur yielded a resale of 1.65 million won on a 400,000-won purchase. A Bruno Mars concert ticket in 2023 bought for 250,000 won was resold for 1.2 million. Police estimate that roughly two-thirds of the total 2.4 billion won in resale revenue, about 1.6 billion won, was pure profit.

A full-time job with a fake front

Authorities say the man made ticket scalping his primary income after graduating from university, holding no other regular job across the entire seven-year period. To keep his bank account activity from raising flags, he registered a business in the e-commerce sector. The shell gave the money flows a surface-level explanation.

He was also an active participant in a social media group chat dedicated to illicit ticket trading, where more than 1,300 members exchanged tips on macro programs, ticket availability, and crucially, police enforcement activity. That last detail suggests the network was tracking crackdowns in near real time.

Proceeds from the operation went into real estate. The suspect used the money to purchase an apartment and two commercial properties in Gyeonggi Province. The apartment has since been sold, but police identified the two remaining commercial properties along with financial claims totaling 1.26 billion won and moved to freeze them before indictment.

He tried to erase the evidence

The operation started unraveling in April, when police arrested 16 members of a separate large-scale scalping ring linked to the same online community, a group that had collectively handled some 7.1 billion won in illegal resales. After hearing about the crackdown, the suspect allegedly shut down his business registration and reset both his computers and mobile phones.

It didn't work. Investigators recovered data through digital forensics and materials seized during a search of his residence. Police are continuing to investigate other suspected scalpers tied to the same network.

The timing of the arrest is notable: a revised Public Performance Act and National Sports Promotion Act took effect on the 28th, expanding the scope of punishable ticket-resale offenses beyond cases that specifically involve macro programs. Authorities can now go after illegal resellers even when automated purchasing software isn't in the picture.
