NOWZ stepped back into the K-pop spotlight on August 5 with 'Archilles', their first domestic release since November last year, performing at a showcase in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul to mark the occasion. Nine months is a long gap by K-pop standards, and the group seemed aware of that: at the event, they made clear they had been preparing hard.

"We've been grinding on every front for this comeback, visuals, performance, the music itself," the group said at the showcase. Member Siwoon set the tone for the whole project early: "The keyword for this single is 'zero sexy'. Like a zero-sugar cola that somehow still tastes sweet, we want to show our own freshness and sexiness by staying true to the essence."

'Archilles' builds its sound around 1980s funk and disco, a deliberately retro choice that stands apart from the EDM-heavy or crush-pop releases dominating the summer market. The song traces the experience of being instantly drawn to someone and then slowly losing your footing as feelings take hold. Siwoon explained the title directly: "Achilles literally means a weakness. No matter how strong someone is, a weakness exists, and we wanted to say that weakness is love. The song captures the moment when one person makes you shake and fall apart."

The generational contrast behind the music is hard to ignore. All five NOWZ members were born in the 2000s, which means none of them were alive when the genre they're channeling was in its commercial prime. Member Hyeonbin leaned into that gap rather than away from it: "Five people born in the 2000s performing 1980s music on stage, that felt like it could create something different and genuinely fun."

Member Yeonwoo offered a more sensory take on where the song lives best: "If you listen to this while driving around sunset, around 7 p.m., you'll really feel what the song is about." It's a specific image, and it fits, a warm, slightly woozy disco track is exactly the kind of thing that hits differently through open windows at golden hour.

Member Jinhyuk framed the strategic logic behind the genre choice plainly: "This is a sound that's hard to find in the current K-pop market. Part of the intention was to find that gap and push through it. We want more people to discover NOWZ through this."

The group debuted in April 2024 under the name NOWADAYS before rebranding as NOWZ in June last year. Since then, they've moved across a range of sounds, including a rock-driven track called EVERGLOW and an EDM single called HomeRUN, building a reputation as a group willing to shift gears between releases. 'Archilles' marks another turn, and Siwoon described the evolution in personal terms: "Up to now, we've always made music about youth, challenges, and ambitions. This time, we're singing about young love. We want to show a slightly more mature NOWZ."

The single also follows their Japanese debut mini-album, released in March, making this a particularly active stretch for the group across both markets. NOWZ are scheduled to perform at the 2026 TME Live International Music Awards at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium on August 22, continuing what looks like a busy second half of the year.
