From a Viral Meme to a Debut Chart Win: Rescene's 'Geoje Ya-ho' Moment Pays Off
Girl group Rescene (리센느) claimed their debut music show win on SBS 'The Show' on July 14, performing their remake single 'Pretty Girl.' The victory caps a remarkable viral comeback driven by a single offhand phrase, 'Geoje Ya-ho,' which sent Melon searches for the group up more than 6,500% and pushed their 2024 track 'LOVE ATTACK' to the top of the Melon Top 100 chart two years after release.

Girl group Rescene (리센느) broke into tears on stage as they accepted their first-ever music show trophy on SBS The Show on July 14, winning with their remake single Pretty Girl, a cover of KARA's beloved hit.
For a group that debuted quietly under small agency The Muse Entertainment in March 2024, the moment was the culmination of one of K-pop's more unlikely recent success stories, one built not on a major label push but on a meme born from a casual YouTube moment.

From regional dialect to viral phenomenon
The chain of events that led here traces back to March 20 this year, when a video on leader Wonyi's personal YouTube channel, Annyeonghaseyo Wonyi-imnida Jalbutakdeurimnida, showed members playing with a gyaru fashion concept. In the clip, Japanese member Minami cheerfully shouted "Geoje Ya-ho!" (roughly: "Yay, Geoje!") in response to Wonyi mentioning her hometown of Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province. The exchange was spontaneous and warm, and it spread quickly through YouTube Shorts.
The effect on the group's streaming numbers was immediate and steep. According to Melon, searches for Rescene on the platform rose 6,550% compared to the period before that video went up. Streaming of LOVE ATTACK, the title track from their August 2024 mini-album SCENEDROME, climbed 2,019% over the same window, while the track's listener count grew 977%. By July 8, LOVE ATTACK had reached No. 1 on the Melon Top 100, a full two years and four months after the group's debut. For a five-member group from a small agency, breaking into Melon's top 100 at all is genuinely difficult; landing at the top of it after a chart reverse was something else entirely.
On July 13, the morning after the Melon No. 1 milestone, Pretty Girl had already settled at No. 6 on the same chart, with LOVE ATTACK still holding the top spot.

The trophy speech, and what they said
Accepting the The Show award, members Wonyi, Liv, Minami, May, and Zena addressed their fandom, called Remind (리마인), with visible emotion. "We love Remind so much," they said. "We hope this trophy can be even a small source of hope for everyone out there running toward their dreams. We'll keep running as hard as we can, so please keep watching over us."
The phrasing landed with fans partly because it echoed the group's own journey: years of low-visibility work, a sudden surge they didn't engineer, and a win that arrived on the back of genuine audience discovery rather than industry machinery.
Messages from unexpected corners
When LOVE ATTACK first hit No. 1 on Melon, Rescene held a YouTube Live titled This Is All Thanks to Remind, and the comments section attracted a pair of notably warm messages that have since been recirculated widely.
Geoje City, which Rescene serves as official promotional ambassadors, left a comment reading: "Geoje City promotional ambassadors, Rescene. We're so proud of you. Congratulations."

The more emotionally detailed message came from Sean (션), the Sean of veteran duo Jinusean, who had appeared in a YouTube series called With Sean after member May fulfilled a fan-promised challenge by joining him for a running session. In his comment, Sean wrote that he still vividly remembers the moment Jinusean's debut single "Tell Me" first topped the charts, after his own years as a backup dancer for Seo Taiji and Boys. "The feeling of all your sweat and tears being rewarded in an instant, and the overwhelming sense of 'we did it', no matter how much time passes, you never forget that," he wrote. "Hold on tightly to the joy and gratitude you feel today, and the happiness you feel on that stage." He closed by telling May specifically: "Congratulations to all the members, and congratulations to you too, May!" signing off as "May's running ajeossi, Sean", a nickname that made fans laugh and feel something at the same time.
The person at the center of it
Wonyi, 22, who was born and raised in Geoje, has been at the center of the group's content-driven push. The Annyeonghaseyo Wonyi channel was set up in February by producer Yoon Seong-won of Sol Pa Studio, who recognized early that the members' natural, unguarded personalities were the group's strongest asset. Starting in March, the channel began uploading slice-of-life videos that treated the members less like polished idols and more like likeable characters in a variety show.
In a pre-comeback interview, Wonyi mentioned she has been reading Almond (아몬드), the 2017 debut novel by writer Son Won-pyeong, during downtime between schedules, picking it up instead of her phone while waiting between shoots. The novel follows a teenager born with an unusually small amygdala who cannot easily feel or express emotion, and traces how he learns, through relationships and loss, that empathy is something that can be built rather than simply possessed. Wonyi connected the book to her own experience of feeling self-conscious about her Gyeongsang dialect after moving to Seoul, and to the lesson that accepting difference matters more than erasing it. "I learned that empathy isn't an innate ability but something you can learn," she said.
Pretty Girl is now the group's active promotional single, and Rescene has more scheduled appearances ahead. The The Show win is their first, but the shape of this year suggests it is unlikely to be their last.
