A2O LITE's debut single "NEON" reached No. 1 on Melon's TOP100 at 11 p.m. on the 14th, just 29 hours after its release. That is the fastest debut-song climb since Melon revamped its chart in August 2021, and it came with an unwelcome side story: a wage-arrears controversy involving the parents of the group's 13-year-old youngest member, Aiqing.

How the climb unfolded

"NEON" dropped at 6 p.m. on the 13th and entered Melon's TOP100 at No. 77 by 10 p.m. that night. By 9 a.m. the next morning it was at No. 10, and on the HOT100 it already stood at No. 2. It held No. 2 at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the 14th, then displaced Soyeon's "Quit My Job" (퇴사할게여) at the top an hour later. As of 10 a.m. on the 15th it was still No. 1.

The comparison with earlier rookies is where the speed shows. NewJeans took eight days to top the chart with "Attention" in 2022. ILLIT needed just under two weeks for "Magnetic" in 2024. The mixed-gender group ALL DAY PROJECT's "FAMOUS" took 77 hours.

The chart's current formula matters here. TOP100 ranks songs by the past 24 hours of listening plus the most recent hour, so a one-hour burst is not enough; plays have to keep accumulating for more than a day. Early returns suggest listeners outside the initial fan rush kept pressing play.

Lee Soo-man's return

A2O LITE is a nine-member multinational group: three Korean and three Chinese members, plus Japanese and Thai members. Its debut follows a showcase on the 12th at Kintex in Goyang. Lee, the 74-year-old producer and founder of SM Entertainment, launched the group on the 13th alongside the 15-member boy group A2O SOUL, under A2O Entertainment.

Lee had been barred from domestic music production after selling his SM stake to HYBE in 2023, under a non-compete clause that lifted earlier this year. At the showcase he said he hoped audiences would first feel that the music is "good" before looking for what makes it different. He has also said the song is the most important starting point for any K-pop act. Reaction to the first stage drew comparisons to BoA, Girls' Generation and f(x), and Aiqing's opening performance has been called a "second BoA" by some viewers.

The controversy around Aiqing's parents

Chinese media recently reported claims that a Beijing education company, with Aiqing's mother as its legal representative, failed to pay wages to former employees. Two court enforcement cases have reportedly been filed against the company and the parents, totaling about 3.45 million yuan (roughly 690 million won). It has not been confirmed that the entire amount is unpaid wages.

On the 14th, Aiqing's mother posted an apology on Weibo, accepted responsibility and said she is working out a resolution with those affected. She added that her daughter has nothing to do with the matter. Online, many voices argue the parents' dispute should be kept separate from the 13-year-old's career.

A2O LITE makes its first music show appearance on Mnet's M Countdown on the 15th. The prediction here is simple: if "NEON" is still in the top five on Melon when that stage airs, this debut will be read as a sustained run and not a one-day spike.
