Choi Ye-na Bought Her Parents a House and a Car After Beating Childhood Cancer

Choi Ye-na's mother has a reputation among fans for fussing over her daughter's health, and on the September 19th episode of MBC's variety show All-Knowing Info (전지적 참견 시점), the reason behind that fussing finally came to light. Stopping by Ye-na's home with a home-cooked meal, her mother's first words were a gentle lecture: "You've been so busy lately. That's exactly when you have to take care of yourself."

Ye-na explained why those words carry more weight than ordinary parental nagging. "When I was a baby, around four or five years old, I had pediatric cancer," she told the panel. "I was fighting for my life." When her condition grew so severe that doctors at the hospital saw no realistic path to recovery, her parents took her photograph to a shaman as a last act of desperation. The shaman looked at the photo and threw it back at them, saying they had brought a picture of a dead child. The studio panel, accustomed to Ye-na's bright, high-energy presence, went visibly quiet.

"From that moment, my mom and dad decided they would keep me alive no matter what," she said. "They raised me with so much care."

A second health scare, and an unconventional cure

The childhood health scares did not stop there. When Ye-na was in elementary school, a leg injury left doctors warning her family that she might not walk normally again. Her mother's response was, by any measure, unconventional: she took Ye-na to a public bathhouse and dropped her into one of the large event pools.

"Her reasoning was that if I wanted to survive, I had to move," Ye-na recalled, laughing. "So I had no choice but to kick and struggle. And a month later, I was walking again." The panel erupted, and host Jeon Hyun-mu summed up the room: "So that's why your mom's nagging has gotten more intense. It all makes sense now."

Ye-na framed the entire arc of her life as something her parents gave back to her. "I believe my parents saved a life that was never supposed to continue," she said. "I felt so guilty for all the worry I caused them. That guilt became the reason I told myself I had to succeed, no matter what, and find a way to repay them."

Paying it forward

For Ye-na, "paying it back" is not a figure of speech. She told the panel she has already bought her parents a new home and replaced her mother's car. Her father's car, she added, is next on the list. "My parents are happy all the time now," she said, with the kind of quiet satisfaction that landed warmer than any big statement could have.

It is the sort of revelation that reframes everything: the relentless schedule, the back-to-back projects, the cheerful refusal to slow down. For Choi Ye-na, the hustle has always had a very specific address.
