KATSEYE has landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with their third mini-album WILD, logging 170,000 album units in its debut tracking week, a number that puts the HYBE-Geffen Records group firmly in the conversation with the biggest names in global pop.

Billboard confirmed the chart position on the 22nd (local time), noting that WILD knocked out Phoebe Bridgers' Lost Weekend and Stray Kids' This & That to claim the top spot. It is KATSEYE's first No. 1 on the chart since the group debuted in 2024, and it makes them only the fourth girl group to reach that peak in the 2020s, after BLACKPINK's Born Pink (2022), NewJeans' Get Up (2023), and TWICE's With YOU-th (2024).

Of the 170,000 total album units, physical sales accounted for 145,000, enough to top the Top Album Sales chart for the week on their own. Streaming equivalent albums (SEA) added 24,500 units, with track equivalent albums (TEA) contributing another 500. The physical-heavy breakdown reflects a dedicated, mobilized fanbase rather than purely casual streaming, a pattern that K-pop-adjacent acts tend to carry with them.

WILD had already signaled its commercial ceiling before the U.S. numbers came in. The album debuted at No. 2 on the UK Official Albums Chart Top 100, KATSEYE's highest-ever position on that chart, giving it a strong showing across both of pop music's major Western markets in the same release cycle.

The album's five tracks move across a range of styles, led by the title track Hootie Frutti, built around percussion-forward pop production and a bold music video that generated significant attention online. Pre-releases PINKY UP and Animal joined ballad-leaning cuts Bel Air and That Way to round out a set that Billboard described as covering "freedom, seduction, heartbreak, and desire." The outlet added: "In just two and a half years, KATSEYE has grown from six girls on a reality show to one of the most talked-about global groups in the pop market."

The production credits are notable. HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk co-wrote on the project alongside Ed Sheeran, Omar Fedi, and Blake Slatkin, a lineup that signals the label is treating KATSEYE as a genuine crossover priority rather than a K-pop-adjacent experiment.

KATSEYE formed through The Debut: Dream Academy, a 2023 survival program co-produced by HYBE and Universal Music's Geffen Records. The six-member group, comprising Sophia (Philippines), Daniela, Lara, and Megan (United States), Yoonchae (South Korea), and Manon (Switzerland, currently on a temporary hiatus from group activities due to health reasons), was explicitly built for Western pop markets from the start. The casting crossed nationalities and backgrounds deliberately, and the group's diversity became a tangible commercial asset: a 2025 GAP campaign centered on that diversity racked up 8 billion impressions in the U.S., and the group ranked second on Google's U.S. Trending Musicians list and first on TikTok's 2025 Global Artist of the Year.

Their earlier mini-albums SIS (Soft Is Strong) and Beautiful Chaos built a sustained presence on the Billboard 200 without topping it. The singles Gnarly and Gabriela then delivered back-to-back Hot 100 entries last year, and the momentum carried KATSEYE to a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist at the 68th ceremony earlier this year.

In Ha-Rin Ahn Jeonghyun, senior producer at HYBE-Geffen Records, explained the group's design: "The music is structured as pop that global listeners can receive naturally, and the performance is centered on the high-level dance that is K-pop's core strength." The aim was never to clone a Korean idol group for a Western audience, but to take the K-pop system's training infrastructure, content production, and fan communication methods and rebuild them inside an American market context.

Critic Lim Hee-yoon put it more directly, pointing to a gap in Western pop that KATSEYE has moved to fill: the lineage of English-language dance-pop girl groups, a tradition running from the Spice Girls through Destiny's Child to the Pussycat Dolls, has had few credible successors for over a decade. "KATSEYE's willingness to take bold concepts, including sensual ones, and the American market's appetite for exactly that kind of act, came together at the right moment," he said.

The model KATSEYE represents, what analysts are calling Made by Korea rather than Made in Korea, is the more interesting story for the industry. Korean acts touring the world is well-established; a group engineered using K-pop methodology but built natively inside a Western pop infrastructure is a newer and harder thing to pull off. A No. 1 on the Billboard 200 at this point in their catalog, with their most commercially aggressive record to date, is the strongest evidence yet that the formula holds. Circle the 22nd of August. This is the chart position that will open the next chapter.
