'I'll Be Right Back, Jeju': Kwon Yuri Exits Her Island Life for Hyo-Ri-Su Debut
Kwon Yuri is leaving her Jeju home base after more than three years to prepare for the August 31 debut of Girls' Generation subunit Hyo-Ri-Su. The move comes right after a brief 'Lee Hyori copycat' controversy over her island lifestyle, which fans quickly moved to debunk.

Kwon Yuri announced she's leaving Jeju on the 19th, posting a series of photos from the island with the caption: "I'll be right back after the Hyo-Ri-Su debut, Jeju." Short, breezy, and timed just well enough to put a little distance between herself and a controversy that had been circling her for days.
The reason for the departure is concrete: Hyo-Ri-Su, the Girls' Generation project unit formed by Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung, debuts on the 31st. The group has already appeared on MBC's Nol-myeon Mwohani? and is in full prep mode ahead of the release of their new single "Skibidi", including choreography rehearsals.

But the timing of Yuri's announcement is what gives it an edge. Right before she posted, an MBC I Live Alone preview had aired clips of her Jeju routine: sunrise yoga on the beach at dawn, a custom-converted vehicle, the whole slow-life package. Most viewers warmed to it immediately. A smaller faction did not.
That faction's complaint: Yuri was mimicking Lee Hyori, the veteran singer and actress who became synonymous with the Jeju aesthetic years ago. "Copycat" and "performative" were the words getting thrown around.
The pushback was fast. Multiple people who claimed to have spotted Yuri around Jeju over the years stepped in to say the lifestyle isn't a production, it's just her life. She's been based there for over three years. Framing a three-year residency as a Lee Hyori impression is a stretch, and most of the online reaction landed on that side.
Yuri's photos from the 19th show her unhurried in Jeju's scenery before the departure, arm tattoos visible, looking like someone who is genuinely going to miss the place rather than someone performing a goodbye.
With Hyo-Ri-Su's debut days away, the Jeju controversy has already started fading into background noise. Yuri, Hyoyeon, and Sooyoung back on a stage together is the story that matters now.
