PLAVE's fifth mini album, HYPERDRIVE, sold roughly 1.32 million copies in its first week, according to Hanteo Chart figures reported on the 19th. That is the virtual idol group's highest first-week total to date, edging past the 1.25 million it recorded with its fourth mini album, Caligo Pt.2.

The album came out on the 13th, and the streaming numbers moved just as fast. As of midnight on release day, every track, the title song included, held a spot between first and fifth place on Korea's major music platforms, among them Melon, Genie and Bugs.

Streaming that didn't fade after launch day

The chart run has had some staying power. As of the 23rd, five tracks from the album were still sitting near the top of the Melon HOT 100: "Star Trace," "Blue Sky Rain," "Kkun," "Rewind" and "The Answer Is Yes." (These titles are rendered from the Korean, so official English spellings may differ.)

For fans who have watched PLAVE's numbers climb with each release, a record on the album side paired with a crowded streaming chart is the kind of double result that is hard to wave off as fandom-only buying. Both columns moved in the same week.

A virtual concept built on music

PLAVE performs through virtual characters, which was an unfamiliar approach in the K-pop market when the group started. According to the report, the group built its base through polished music, steady communication with fans, and varied stages and content.

An industry source quoted by SPOTV News said PLAVE has a distinctive identity as a virtual idol but has turned it into a strength through the competitiveness of its music alone. The source added that results on both album sales and music charts show the group's musical influence "growing endlessly," and that attention is gathering on how far the presence of PLAVE, the most successful of the virtual idols, will expand.

With each album outselling the last, the open question is how much further the group can push the ceiling for virtual artists in K-pop.
