Kim Min-ha Says She Was 'Genuinely Baffled' by the Buzz Around Her 17kg Role Transformation

Actress Kim Min-ha had one reaction to finding out that her 17kg weight loss was dominating Korean entertainment news for a week: "I was genuinely surprised. I kept thinking, is this really something that warrants all this?"

She said it with a kind of straightforward bewilderment, not false modesty, on the August 7th episode of MBN and Channel S's food-and-travel variety show Jeon Hyun-moo Plan 4, where she joined host Jeon Hyun-moo and YouTuber Kwak Tube on a food trip through Incheon.

Jeon Hyun-moo spotted the change immediately. "You've lost so much weight," he told her. "I greeted you at the Cheongryong Series Awards last year and you're a completely different person." Kim Min-ha agreed she had, but seemed more puzzled than pleased by the attention it was drawing. Jeon Hyun-moo offered a bit of context: "In Korea, if you say you've dieted hard, you're a trending topic for a whole week."

For Kim Min-ha, the transformation was simply practical. She had mentioned in a recent interview for her film Hana Korea that the 16 to 17 kilograms came off gradually over roughly two years, not through any crash approach. "Almost 90 percent of it was for roles," she explained. "Not just the projects people already know about, but the ones coming after them too. They all required losing a significant amount of weight." Her phrasing was matter-of-fact, the way someone talks about learning a dialect or practicing a fight sequence for a part.

That practical relationship with her own appearance extends to how she thinks about casting. When the conversation turned to future roles, she said she wants to play characters where "the very bottom of a person's inner life is exposed" and mentioned Black Swan as the kind of desire-driven intensity she's drawn to. When Jeon Hyun-moo asked whether she had any interest in romance roles, her answer was direct: "I don't think I'm interested in roles where you have to be pretty."

She was equally candid about her freckles, which have become something of a signature. Jeon Hyun-moo noted that searching her name in Korean portals brings up 'freckles' as the top related term, calling it one of her most appealing features. Kim Min-ha said she had never really registered them as remarkable. "When I was a kid, they never bothered me, not once. I didn't think about it." She only realized others found them distinctive after she started acting. "People kept mentioning it, and at first I thought, why is this even something to comment on?" Jeon Hyun-moo told her he was glad she never covered them up permanently, noting they could always be concealed or emphasized depending on the character.

The episode also produced a more unexpected confession. Earlier in the day, Jeon Hyun-moo brought up the opening performance Kim Min-ha had delivered at the Cheongryong Series Awards, and praised her vocal ability with genuine enthusiasm, comparing her singing to a high-level hidden talent. She responded by revealing that she had actually trained as a singer in high school, went through an audition, and was signed to an agency. The plan fell apart over creative differences: the agency wanted to develop her as an idol. "I wanted to be a jazz singer," she said, leaving the sentence to finish itself.

It's the kind of detail that reframes a career a little. Kim Min-ha has built a reputation on unusual choices and a somewhat cool remove from conventional expectation, and it turns out that started before the acting did.
