Ryu Yi-seo: Flight Attendant Bonuses Are 80% of Pay, and Three Months a Year There's Nothing
Former Asiana flight attendant and YouTube creator Ryu Yi-seo explained how cabin crew pay actually works, and noted that bonuses can account for roughly 80% of monthly income. March, May, and July are the months with no bonus at all.

Former Asiana Airlines flight attendant and YouTube creator Ryu Yi-seo offered a candid breakdown of how cabin crew compensation actually works on the 11th, and landed on a punchline that resonated: boyfriends of flight attendants should watch themselves in March, May, and July. The comment came from a straightforward financial reality she described in the same breath.

The video, published on her YouTube channel under the title roughly translated as 'Wake-up Calls Are Non-Negotiable: Ex-Flight Attendants Ryu Yi-seo and Seong Hae-eun Reveal Behind-the-Scenes Cabin Crew Stories for the First Time,' also featured Seong Hae-eun, an influencer known from the dating reality program Transit Love 2. Seong Hae-eun is a former Korean Air flight attendant, giving the conversation two perspectives from competing carriers.

How flight attendant pay actually works
Both women addressed one of the more opaque aspects of the profession: the sheer variability of the paycheck. Ryu Yi-seo, who spent 16 years at Asiana, explained that rank and seniority affect base pay only marginally. What moves the number significantly is flying hours, long-haul routes, and the exchange rate at layover destinations, which determines how much per-diem allowance a crew member receives. Seong Hae-eun made the same point from the Korean Air side: fewer flights means a smaller total, while more long-haul routes push it considerably higher.

The detail that framed the rest of the conversation was the bonus structure. Ryu Yi-seo said that during her one-year internship period, bonuses were not paid at all, leaving her with around 2 million won a month at the time. Once past the internship stage, bonuses become a central part of compensation, adding something closer to 80% on top of base salary in months when they are paid. Bonuses tied to the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays add extra payments in those months as well.
The catch is that three months every year have no bonus: March, May, and July. When a fellow guest, Jeon Jin, observed that those months must put everyone in a sour mood, Ryu Yi-seo replied with a laugh that partners should consider themselves warned.
The exchange is lighthearted, but the underlying structure it describes is a genuine feature of Korean airline pay that many outside the industry are unfamiliar with. For cabin crew, base salary alone gives an incomplete picture of what any given month actually looks like.
