'Chaebol X Detective 2' Hasn't Aired Yet and It's Already Facing an 8% Ratings Rival

MBC's Married Woman Killer opened to a 7.4% national household rating on July 31, the only weekend miniseries airing that Friday after SBS chose to delay the premiere of Chaebol X Detective 2 to August 7. By Saturday, with all competing shows back on air, the number climbed further: Episode 2 drew 8.0% nationally, with a peak of 10.6% and a 2054 demographic rating of 3.0%, the highest of any program broadcast that day.

For context, KBS2's Completion of Marriage managed 7.5% on the same Saturday, tvN's Chilling Romance drew 5.5%, and JTBC's Apartment landed at 4.4%. Married Woman Killer led the field outright.

SBS's reasoning for the gap was visible enough. Rather than move immediately from the well-received Director Kim into its sequel series, the network aired Director Kim: The Universe, a special bridging program intended to maintain momentum and ease viewers into Chaebol X Detective 2, which returns after a two-year absence. The strategy made sense on paper: lower the entry barrier for a season premiere, keep the fanbase warm.

The ratings tell a different story. The two-part special drew 4.5% and 3.5% respectively on July 31 and August 1, a substantial gap below Married Woman Killer's numbers across the same weekend. Specials almost always underperform regular episodes because they lack new plot developments; viewers who want answers to what happens next have no reason to tune in. Meanwhile, Married Woman Killer spent its first two episodes doing exactly what a new drama should: introducing its lead, establishing its world, and moving the central conflict far enough forward that audiences have a reason to come back.

The practical consequence is that Chaebol X Detective 2 now enters its premiere week against a show already sitting at 8.0% and carrying early viewer loyalty. Had SBS scheduled the sequel to follow Director Kim directly, it might have inherited some of that series' viewing flow. Instead, Married Woman Killer filled the vacuum first.

That said, one week of data is a narrow basis for a verdict. Chaebol X Detective Season 1 peaked at 11.0%, and the franchise carries genuine name recognition. Viewers who have been waiting specifically for the sequel may consolidate around the premiere in a way that shifts the balance quickly.

This week brings the direct head-to-head test: Married Woman Killer defending its early lead against Chaebol X Detective 2 making its case to Season 1 loyalists. Whether SBS's scheduling decision reads as a calculated warm-up or an unnecessary gift to the competition will depend heavily on what those numbers look like by Saturday night.
