Yoo Jae-suk arrived at a filming location near Jongno in Seoul on the 22nd, ready to tape an episode of the SBS variety program Teumdamyeon (Season 5), and left without a single frame shot. Before the crew could call action, he informed the production team that he was not well enough to continue, and the recording was called off shortly after he had finished greeting the staff.

For a host who has spent 35 years building a reputation for near-perfect attendance, the cancellation carries weight beyond one missed episode. Korean variety television runs on tight weekly schedules, and a same-day pull-out creates a cascade of rescheduling for a full production crew. That this has not happened before in Yoo's career is, by any measure, a striking detail.

What happened on set

According to people present at the location, Yoo had been battling a cold and body aches before the shoot, and a high fever compounded his condition by the time he reached the set. Staff members said he looked unwell from the moment he arrived, and that concern was already running through the crew before he made his decision. He apologized to the staff repeatedly for the disruption. The affected segment will be filmed at a later date.

The only comparable entry in Yoo's record is from 2021, when a COVID-19 diagnosis forced him to cancel a taping of the tvN program You Quiz on the Block in advance. That cancellation was driven by a confirmed diagnosis and public health protocol. This one was different: he made it to the set, tried to push through, and ultimately could not.

Who Yoo Jae-suk is

For readers less familiar with Korean television, Yoo Jae-suk is the closest thing Korean variety entertainment has to an institution. He debuted in 1991 through the first KBS University Comedy Contest and has hosted or co-hosted some of the country's highest-rated programs over the past three decades. The nickname gukmin MC, roughly, "MC of the nation", attached to him during his Infinite Challenge years on MBC, when a special episode featuring him as an extra on the historical drama Yi San drew a 30.4% national rating.

Teumdamyeon, which translates loosely as "Whenever There's a Gap," is a variety format built around delivering small moments of luck to people in the brief idle stretches of daily life. Now in its fifth season, it airs every Tuesday at 9 p.m. and is co-hosted by actor Yoo Yeon-seok.

Yoo Jae-suk was born in 1972 and married former MBC announcer Na Kyung-eun in 2008. The couple have a son, Ji-ho, and a daughter, Na-eun. His professional track record for reliability has been consistent enough that the illness itself, more than any scheduling consequence, appears to be what has his audience most concerned.
